President Obama signed The Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) into law in 2011. The aim? Protect public health by preventing food safety problems before they occur. According to the CDC, “About 48 million people in the U.S. (1 in 6) get sick, 128,000 are hospitalized, and 3,000 die each year from foodborne diseases.” FSMA rolled out several major rules, helping to build a shared responsibility among supply chain stakeholders to ensure the safety of human and animal food.
