The Food and Drug Administration (FDA)plans to finalize the Food Traceability Rule this fall. With the final rule in place, additional record-keeping requirements will be mandatory for many food and beverage manufacturers. In fact, the proposed rule would make compliance using manual systems nearly impossible.
Section 204 of the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) requires the FDA to designate foods for which additional record-keeping requirements are appropriate and necessary to protect public health, and to establish those record-keeping requirements. Despite the looming deadline, a sizable percentage of the food industry is not prepared to deliver that information to FDA.
When finalized, the new rule would require companies to provide documentation for certain Key Data Elements (KDEs) for Critical Tracking Events (CTEs). Moreover, companies must provide documentation within 24 hours of request and in a sortable, electronic spreadsheet. If you feel ill-prepared, you’re not alone.
